Service term: August 22, 2016 – August 21, 2017

zak-headshotZak relocated to Richmond from Chandler, AZ to serve as the VHA VISTA Leader. He will focus on supporting the cohort of VHA VISTA Members across the Commonwealth. He received a Certificate in Audio Production from East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) in Mesa, AZ, in 2014. At EVIT, he worked as an assistant engineer and on-air radio personality for Pulse Radio. After that, he served with AmeriCorps NCCC out of the Sacramento, CA campus where he did work ranging from mentoring youth in South Central Los Angeles to trail work in Auberry, CA. During the past year, Zak served as an AmeriCorps Public Ally and was placed with the Arizona Coalition to End Homelessness (AZCEH) as the Training Support Specialist. His duties at AZCEH included managing social media accounts and helping plan and manage trainings throughout the state of Arizona. Through this work he found a passion in the homeless services sector and hopes to one day help start a homeless shelter and housing program for LGBTQ+ youth.

What has been the most impactful thing you have learned about since becoming a VHA VISTA?

The most impactful thing I’ve learned would have to be the overall effort in ending homelessness in Virginia. While it’s not an easy task, there are so many organizations here that are doing a lot of great work in the communities!

What are you most excited to be working on this year?

I am most excited about recruiting and meeting our next cohort of VISTA members and continuing to organize our quarterly cohort meetings.

What is one career goal you have?

A big career goal of mine would have to be becoming a staff member for AmeriCorps NCCC. AmeriCorps programs in general are a big part of who I am and they truly shaped me into being the person I am today, but AmeriCorps NCCC has stuck with me the most and I’d love to help others learn and grow in the program as much as I did.

What are your hobbies?

Traveling, kayaking, camping, rock climbing and going to concerts!
