Caroline is the Affordable Housing VISTA at Southside Community Development and Housing Corporation (SCDHC) in Richmond, VA. Caroline is excited to continue learning about innovative projects in affordable housing and community development that will support her Richmond/Southside neighbors.
Current Project:
Caroline is currently assisting with the research and writing of a SCDHC Guidebook that documents a wide array of elements that comprise SCDHC’s model for affordable housing development in Emporia, VA. Some of these elements include market studies, how to leverage existing resources and attract new resources, and community outreach strategies. Caroline is specifically conducting research on Emporia’s economic and community development history, illuminating the successes and challenges in housing and development over the decades since Emporia’s chartering as a city in 1967. This study has already uncovered information about Emporia’s past engagement with affordable housing efforts, demographic trends, and city government policies. Caroline hopes that her research will draw attention to the importance of supporting the specific needs of rural communities and combatting stereotypes about rural Virginia. Her section of the Guidebook will encourage other localities to examine their history and implement tangible strategies to empower groups historically excluded from the benefits of stable and affordable housing.
About Caroline:
Caroline grew up in Charlottesville, VA and graduated from the University of Virginia in 2023. She completed an interdisciplinary major in Political and Social Thought (PST) and minored in Spanish. She also maintained excellent attendance at home basketball games. Caroline moved to Richmond, VA following graduation to seek new opportunities and explore careers in the social sector. Prior to the VISTA program, she’s enjoyed working as a barista, volunteering at the International Rescue Committee, relaxing by the James River, and practicing yoga.
