The Virginia Housing Alliance (VHA) is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding access to safe, affordable housing and ending homelessness across the Commonwealth. Through advocacy, education, and collaboration, VHA works to strengthen Virginia’s housing and homelessness response system and advance solutions that support housing stability for all.

Housing Credit Conference (HCC) focuses on the development and financing of affordable housing. Grounded in the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program, it convenes developers, investors, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore the tools, policies, and partnerships that make housing possible across Virginia.

2026 Theme: Create! Turning Ideas Into Impact

As the final installment of VHA’s Connect, Collaborate, Create series, this year’s theme focuses on turning ideas into action. Sessions will highlight innovative approaches and real-world strategies responding to Virginia’s evolving housing challenges.

CraneWatch

Applications for Cranewatch are now open! This fast-paced session highlights affordable housing developments across Virginia – either recently completed or under construction – and is a great opportunity to share your work with developers, lenders, and housing leaders from across the Commonwealth. This year’s Cranewatch will be during the HCC lunch hour, giving your project even greater visibility. Get your applications in early to be among the few projects highlighted this year!

CRANEWATCH CRITERIA

Planning for the 2026 Housing Credit Conference is well underway! This year, we are excited to once again feature the popular “Crane Watch” session. This fast-paced program offers attendees the opportunity to learn about affordable housing developments across Virginia that are currently under construction or have been recently completed.

Application proposals are due by August 1, 2026. Additional submission details are included below.

Presentations will be made to all attendees during the Housing Credit Conference on October 19, 2026. Additional session details will be shared closer to the conference.

Each presentation will be limited to 8–10 minutes and may include no more than two (2) presenters. Presentations must include a slide recognizing the project’s third-party team, and a portion of the presentation should acknowledge the significant contributions of specific team members.

Presenters will share mini case studies of their projects, including lessons learned, development timelines, photos, site and floor plans, and relevant site, building, funding, and financial information.

This session is open to developers, architects, general contractors, and financial advisors. While most presentations are typically led by developers, we strongly encourage applicants to include at least one third-party project partner as a presenter.

To help showcase the breadth of affordable housing work happening across the Commonwealth, we encourage applications representing diverse geographic regions of Virginia, including urban, suburban, and rural communities.

If you are interested in presenting your project, please submit by August 1, 2026. Submissions are limited to a brief two-page summary that must include:

Projects currently under construction as of August 1, 2026, will be prioritized. Completed deals that were placed in service after December 31, 2024, will also be considered.
Name of Presenter(s) and contact information
Names of Core Developer, Team, Organizations or Members
Project Location, Type of Project (new construction, acq-rehab), Project Specifics (units, mixed uses, income levels served)
Summary of 2-3 Unique Development or other Challenges you will present on

Since 2012, the Virginia Housing Alliance (VHA) has convened the Housing Credit Conference (HCC), bringing together the professionals shaping Virginia’s affordable housing landscape. As we mark 10 years, VHA continues to strengthen the Commonwealth’s housing and homelessness response system by elevating housing stability as a statewide priority, building member capacity, and advancing policies that expand housing opportunity and protect our most vulnerable neighbors.

Create! Turning Ideas Into Impact marks the third and final iteration of VHA’s three-part conference theme series, Connect, Collaborate, Create. This year’s theme highlights the work of adapting, collaborating, and building solutions in a changing environment. If you have a session proposal that aligns with this theme, we would love to hear from you. Please submit your proposal by Thursday, March 19th, 2026.
