What is your current role, and what are your main responsibilities?
I am the Executive Director of Fertile Ground Communities, Inc., where I lead our mission to provide high-quality, affordable housing alongside wraparound services that address the root causes of homelessness and poverty. My focus is on green building innovations and renewable energy integration to create sustainable, cost-effective housing solutions.
I oversee strategic planning, program development, and community partnerships, ensuring our resident-driven approach fosters long-term stability and independence. My role also includes fundraising, policy advocacy, and organizational leadership, all aimed at breaking down systemic barriers and revitalizing communities.
How do you see the field of affordable housing evolving in the next few years?
Affordable housing is undergoing major shifts, shaped by policy changes, technological advancements, and sustainable development trends. Key areas of growth include:
✅ Green Building & Renewable Energy – Energy-efficient housing, solar power, net-zero designs, and public-private investments in sustainable infrastructure will reduce costs for residents and increase climate resilience.
✅ Social Enterprise in Housing – Impact investing and mission-driven business models will fund housing initiatives, with workforce training in green building and renewable energy creating economic opportunities.
✅ Policy & Zoning Reforms – Cities are moving toward inclusive zoning, mixed-income developments, and policies supporting accessory dwelling units (ADUs), eviction prevention programs, and tenant protections.
✅ Innovative Construction Models – Modular housing, 3D-printed homes, and prefabricated construction will make housing production faster and more cost-effective, especially in underserved communities.
✅ Resident-Centered Approaches – Community land trusts (CLTs), co-op housing, and participatory decision-making will empower residents and support long-term affordability.
✅ Public-Private Partnerships & New Funding Models – With rising housing costs, impact bonds, green financing, and tax incentives will play a key role in expanding affordable housing resources.

What do you find most rewarding about your work in affordable housing?
The most fulfilling part of my work is seeing individuals and families move from housing insecurity to stability in a safe, supportive environment. Housing is more than just a roof over someone’s head—it’s the foundation for economic mobility, dignity, and opportunity.
I’m especially passionate about integrating green building and renewable energy into housing solutions. This not only reduces costs for residents but also creates job opportunities in the growing green economy. Watching people secure stable housing, meaningful employment, and a pathway toward financial independence is what keeps me motivated every day.
Collaborating with residents, community leaders, and industry partners to build resident-driven solutions makes this work deeply meaningful. The most rewarding moments come when a family moves into a home they can afford, a resident secures a sustainable job, or a neighborhood is revitalized through green development. This work is about restoring hope, dignity, and opportunity for future generations.

[HLI] has been a transformative experience, strengthening my leadership, expanding my strategic vision, and connecting me with a network of passionate, innovative leaders committed to advancing equitable housing solutions.
What is a fun fact or personal anecdote about your housing or professional journey?
My passion for affordable housing was cemented when I participated in the Baltimore Supportive Housing Institute, facilitated by the Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH). That experience deepened my understanding of supportive housing as a tool for stability, dignity, and opportunity—not just for individuals but for entire communities.
Inspired by that experience, I launched Fertile Ground Communities, Inc., bringing together my 20+ years as a real estate attorney with my dedication to community service and mentoring justice-involved youth. My vision is to ensure that sustainable, energy-efficient housing isn’t a luxury but a necessity for marginalized communities that often face environmental and economic hardships.
By integrating renewable energy solutions, green building practices, and workforce development in the green sector, we’re not just providing housing—we’re creating resilient, self-sustaining communities where people can thrive.
This journey has reinforced my belief that affordable housing is more than just shelter—it’s a catalyst for empowerment, economic mobility, and environmental sustainability. Through innovative, resident-driven solutions, I’m committed to making sure that our most vulnerable populations have access to homes that provide a true pathway to independence and opportunity.
About the Housing Leadership Institute
The Housing Leadership Institute (HLI) is a 10-month intensive and targeted program created and implemented by the Virginia Housing Alliance. The Alliance and its partners designed the program to leverage training, coaching, and peer support. Each year we help 15 mid-career housing professionals foster and grow leadership skills. Through the program, participants create a career development plan to catalyze their leadership trajectory.
The program consists of 7 virtual sessions, 3 in-person retreats across the Commonwealth, 5 one-on-one coaching sessions, readings and reflections to supplement each session, and additional networking and professional development opportunities.
