What is your current role, and what are your main responsibilities?

I am the Director of Operations for the YWCA, where I oversee the operations of all six YWCA buildings and locations. My responsibilities include managing grant reporting, invoicing, building maintenance, acquisitions, contractors, technology, databases, and security. My role ensures that every YWCA employee has the tools they need to provide exceptional service to our clients, funders, children, parents, and community members.

Additionally, I contribute to new initiatives, enhance operational efficiencies, and establish structured processes across our programs. Furthermore, as a member of the senior leadership team, I help guide organizational decisions and policy development to support the YWCA’s mission.

How do you see the field of affordable housing evolving in the next few years?

I believe we’re at a pivotal moment to transform the affordable housing landscape, not just in Richmond but across the state. Working with leaders in [HLI] has been incredibly inspiring; you can hear the passion of those driving change on the ground.

As our voices continue to grow, so will awareness of affordable housing needs; more people will begin to understand its importance and potential. Educating communities about what affordable housing truly is—and addressing misconceptions—will be key to fostering change and creating a brighter future for everyone.

How do you stay motivated and passionate about your work in the face of challenges?

Staying motivated during tough times can be challenging, but I focus on the progress we’ve made and the lives we’re impacting. For example, seeing clients or staff members gain confidence and realize their potential energizes me. Ultimately, witnessing these transformations reminds me why I do this work and keeps me moving forward with purpose.

Do you have any hobbies or interests that help you unwind and stay balanced?

Spending quality time with family and friends is my ultimate recharge. I’m a foodie at heart and love exploring new restaurants and trying different cuisines. Baking is another passion of mine—it clears my mind and allows me to unwind. In fact, I turned this hobby into an online bakery a few years ago, which keeps me busy!

Otherwise when I’m not baking, you’ll find me watching sports, indulging in reality TV, or listening to music.

What are some of the most valuable lessons you’ve learned through HLI?

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned through [HLI] is that while I dedicate myself to taking care of others, it’s equally important to invest in myself.

Specifically, connecting with my career coach has been a game-changer. They have helped me grow professionally while giving me space to focus on my career and personal development. Together, the guidance I’ve received from my career coach, [HLI] leaders, and fellow cohort members has been invaluable and continues to shape my journey.

What is a fun fact or personal anecdote about your housing or professional journey?

Here’s a fun fact: my journey into the housing profession happened by accident! I never planned to work in this field. However conversations with people struggling with housing ignited a deep empathy and determination in me. This unexpected path eventually turned into a rewarding career where I could make a real difference. Ultimately, it’s safe to say that stumbling into housing was the best “mistake” I’ve ever made.

About the Housing Leadership Institute

The Housing Leadership Institute (HLI) is a 10-month intensive and targeted program created and implemented by the Virginia Housing Alliance. The Alliance and its partners designed the program to leverage training, coaching, and peer support. Each year we help 15 mid-career housing professionals foster and grow leadership skills. Through the program, participants create a career development plan to catalyze their leadership trajectory.

The program consists of 7 virtual sessions, 3 in-person retreats across the Commonwealth, 5 one-on-one coaching sessions, readings and reflections to supplement each session, and additional networking and professional development opportunities.
