We are thrilled to introduce VCDC as our July 2026 VHA Member Spotlight! Since 1990, VCDC has been partnering with local communities across Virginia to provide vital financial resources and support for affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization initiatives. VCDC facilitates strong relationships between developers, investors, and communities in order to foster inclusive, locally-driven change. To date, VCDC has helped finance over $1 billion across more than 280 multifamily housing and commercial properties.
We recently caught up with VCDC staff to learn more about their work, vision, and some exciting programs and upcoming events.
Q: How would you describe VCDC’s mission, in a nutshell?
Q: We’ve been hearing a lot about VCDC’s Mission Elevation Program. Can you tell us a little bit more about this initiative?
While VCDC is widely known for providing capital to affordable housing and community development projects, we believe that strong communities require more than financial investment alone. Lasting impact depends on the strength of the organizations and leaders working to serve those communities. Investing in human capital, leadership development, and organizational sustainability has long been a hallmark of VCDC’s mission.
Mission Elevation is designed to help executive leaders strengthen their organizations, enhance their leadership effectiveness, and build sustainable strategies for long-term impact. Through peer learning, executive coaching, and practical organizational development tools, participants gain the skills, perspective, and support needed to lead through change and position their organizations for future success. By investing in leaders, VCDC helps strengthen the organizations and partnerships that make affordable housing, homelessness services, and community development possible.
Cohort 8 begins in October 2026, and now is the time for interested leaders to start the conversation. We are currently identifying participants for the next cohort and encourage executives who are looking to grow their organization’s impact, sustainability, and leadership capacity to learn more about the program and the selection process.
Q: Are there any upcoming events or projects you’d like to share with VHA’s community?
VCDC is excited to be hosting The Power of Connection: Networking and Communicating with Purpose on Thursday, August 6th, 2026 at the Virginia Housing Center in Glen Allen. This professional development event is designed to help housing, homelessness, and community development professionals build stronger relationships and communicate more effectively in their work, leadership, and daily lives.
The event will feature nationally recognized speaker Julie Brown, founder of the Professional Development Group, along with an interactive workshop led by Dr. Fred Gaty, leadership consultant and executive coach. Together, they will explore practical strategies for purposeful networking, relationship building, and authentic communication.
At VCDC, we believe that strong communities are built through strong partnerships. This event reflects our commitment to investing not only in projects and organizations, but also in the people whose leadership and connections help drive meaningful community impact. We invite professionals from across Virginia’s housing and community development sectors to join us on August 6th.
Q: How has your Virginia Housing Alliance membership been valuable to your affordable housing and community development work?
We have attended many VHA events, including Housing Advocacy Day and the Housing Credit Conference (HCC). HCC has always been an insightful conference for us, providing a unique space to connect with other organizations in the housing industry. We’ve enjoyed learning about new trends, ideas, and projects through the conference sessions and have appreciated the opportunity to have some of our staff members serve as thought leaders on panel sessions.
In addition, VCDC has had a very positive experience hosting a VHA VISTA. In fact, Molly Dye, who joined our organization through the program in 2023, continues to serve on our team today after transitioning into a full-time role following her VISTA year.
The VHA VISTA program helped expand our organizational capacity while also creating an opportunity to develop and retain emerging talent within the housing and community development field. Molly’s contributions during her service year added meaningful support to our work, and her continued growth within the organization reflects the long-term value of investing in passionate professionals who are committed to strengthening communities.
Programs like VISTA not only help organizations build capacity in the short term, but also strengthen the broader affordable housing and community development workforce by creating pathways for future leaders in the sector.
Q: What do you believe to be the most rewarding aspect of VCDC’s work?
The most rewarding part of our work at VCDC is seeing how collaboration can shape the future of a community. By bringing together developers, investors, nonprofit organizations, public-sector partners, and other stakeholders, we help transform ideas into tangible developments that create lasting impact.
Our role as both a financing partner and trusted advisor allows us to develop creative solutions that help projects move from concept to completion. It is especially gratifying to see the ripple effect of that work—not only in the affordable housing that gets built, but in the stronger communities and opportunities it creates for residents.
