Piedmont Habitat for Humanity has collaborated with Virginia Housing Alliance and Nonprofit VOTE the past three years to provide nonpartisan voter engagement activities and resources in their community. Their efforts have included connecting with the six counties they serve via a variety of avenues such as participating in back to college and back to school school activities, community festivals, health fairs, NAACP events, and engaging patrons that are visiting their ReStore locations. At their voter engagement events, they frequently utilize Legos and lollipops to entice kids to visit their booth, often with adults in tow. They also prioritize engaging young adults to increase their voter participation rate, and they continually communicate via their social media accounts with their 5000 followers.  Additionally, Russell Dove, Piedmont Habitat for Humanity’s Community Outreach Coordinator, routinely communicates via email with over 1100 contacts that include their Habitat homeowners, contractors, donors, supporters, and volunteers to share information with other service organizations. Dove said that he was personally enthused about Piedmont Habitat for Humanity’s voter engagement efforts this year because his “oldest grandchild is eligible to cast his first ballot and a family member will be eligible to vote after the restoration of his rights!”
