In a new study in the Social Science Research Network, the authors conducted a national online survey of 5,000 urban and suburban adults to find their opinions on a range of housing policy solutions. The opinions of survey respondents largely contradict the common talking points of pro-deregulation supply-side economists, as the vast majority of respondents support stricter rent control, more stringent regulation of corporate landlords, inclusionary zoning, property tax caps, and the expansion of affordable housing subsidies. These results expose a stark misalignment between the conventional methods of housing policy making and the wants of the general public. With this study in mind, potential voters may be more receptive to deeper housing subsidies and demand-side solutions than conventional knowledge suggests. As the housing cost crisis continues and evolves, research must continue to provide the updates necessary to better align the needs of citizens with the policy offerings of elected officials.
